A couple of months ago I ordered a copy of Norman Mailer's "The Faith of Graffiti" from a used-books site. By coincidence, I found out the author had died the same day. The book turned out to be an oversize paperback, about the size of a copy of the New York Post, with about 80 pages of images (by Mervyn Kurlansky & Jon Naar).   The resulting book, “The Faith of Graffiti,” appeared the following year, with a few dozen beautiful images by Naar and a single beautiful essay by Mailer that included such musings as Author: Macy Halford.

The Faith in Graffiti. Febru pm. No Comments on The Faith in Graffiti. It used to annoy me on the few occasions when I picked up a coffee-table book on graffiti and the introduction would waffle on about the history of it stretching from the present all.

The Faith of Graffiti, by Norman Mailer and Jon Naar, goes with the former. In a big way. The reason I wanted to read this book is that for once it adressed the kind of graffiti I see most of the time.

When people talk about street art, or this massive, local pool of street art photos on Flickr, it focuses on some really impressive murals.

This book, however – this is our parent’s graffiti. The Wooster Collective just posted the first installment of a nice video interview with Jon Naar, the photographer behind the seminal book The Faith of Faith Author: Hua Hsu. In The Faith of Graffiti Mailer, along with graphic designer Mervyn Kurlansky and photographer Jon Naar, produced a fiercely debated study of graffiti that finds what Mailer describes as a quality of “ghetto emotion the vibration of that profound discomfort it arouses like the bugles of gathering armies across the unseen ridge.
