“The Velvet Hours is a love letter to the stories we tell and the stories we keep. It poses the idea that even the most well-intentioned life can hold guilt, and even the most aimless can find absolution. Imaginative, rich, and emotionally satisfying, The Velvet Hours is a treasure.”—Jewish Book .   The Velvet Hours (Book): Richman, Alyson: "As Paris teeters on the edge of the German occupation, a young French woman closes the door to her late grandmother's treasure-filled apartment, unsure if she'll ever return. An elusive courtesan, Marthe de Florian cultivated a life of art and beauty, casting out all recollections of her impoverished childhood in the dark alleys of Montmartre.

What made the experience of listening to The Velvet Hours the most enjoyable? I enjoyed the slow, detailed pace of the book. It was relaxing and intriguing at the same time. I didn't realize until i finished the book that it was inspired by a real apartment found in Paris a few years ago.       Imaginative, rich, and emotionally satisfying, The Velvet Hours is a treasure.” Jewish Book Council “The intricate details of the clothing, social mores and interior decoration of the time have been meticulously researched, the meeting of different cultures is convincingly and lovingly depicted, as is the difference between the two women.   Book Review the Velvet Hours by Alyson Richman. It wasn’t until the end of this book when I was reading the authors notes that it became clear to me. I knew that something seemed familiar as I got to the end of this novel. And then I remembered.

Book Overview As Paris teeters on the edge of the German Occupation, a young French woman closes the door to her late grandmother's treasure-filled apartment.

The Velvet Hours has much of what is needed to be a DIK novel and only the fact that it devotes much of its page space to a story not worth telling is what keeps it from that status. I am torn between recommending it for the lovely prose and fascinating tale of Solange and advising readers it is not worth their time and money due to Marthe.
